FOLLOWING the extension of its strike by a further 8 weeks and the threat by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to embark on an indefinite strike, female students of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (ATBU) in collaboration with their counterparts from the Bauchi State University, Gadau (BASUG) have planned to stage a half-naked street protest in Bauchi.
Wikki Times, a Bauchi-based online newspaper and member of the Collaborative Media Project, an initiative of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, to which National Record belongs, reports that over 500 students have agreed to participate in the protest.
“So far we’ve contacted more than 500 female students and they have agreed to participate in the protest and we’re expecting more before the final day.
“As law-abiding students, we’ve been patient enough, our career future is in danger because of some unpatriotic citizens who only care and are concerned by their children and families,” Wikki Times quoted one of the organisers of the protest under anonymity.
The organiser said leaders of the protest will follow all legal means available to them to put more pressure on both parties locked in the negotiation to ensure that universities in the country are reopened soon to enable them to continue pursuing their various degree programmes.
