PRESIDENT Mohammadu Buhari has appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff. The new appointee, who is yet to be screened and endorsed by the Senate, replaces the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General I. Attahiru, who died in an air crash in Kaduna along with 10 others last week.

Defence spokesman, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, disclosed the appointment of General Yahaya in a statement today (Thursday, May 27, 2021) in Abuja.

Prior to his appointment, Major General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Kaduna and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter-Terrorism, Counter-Insurgency military outfit in the North East, code named Operation HADIN KAI.
