THE World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) has condemned last Tuesday’s fatal incident at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos following clampdown on #EndSARS protesters by still to be identified soldiers.
WFTU, an international federation with over 105 million workers in 132 countries across the globe with headquarters in Athens, Greece; in a statement on Thursday, October 22, 2020 entitled: “WFTU in solidarity with the workers of Nigeria,” expressed strong condemnation of “the State repression, attacks and massacres against the workers and the youth in Nigeria, who are protesting against police brutality and bad governance.”
The WFTU said it fully supports the fair demands for the end of violence, for better working and living conditions in the economically strongest African country, where millions of workers live below the poverty line.
“As the world’s class-oriented trade union movement, we firmly stand by the side of Nigerian workers and ordinary people and we urge the country’s authorities to immediately stop the violence, attacks and killings of workers, to respect their democratic and trade union rights and to take urgent measures in their benefit,” said the statement.
