KWARA State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, on Tuesday legally stopped the payment of pension to former governors and deputy governors by signing into law the bill to that effect.
Governor AbdulRazaq had in November 2020 made public his intention to repeal the obnoxious pension law that was instituted in 2011 under the leadership of Dr Bukola Saraki.
While transmitting the bill to the Kwara State House of Assembly, Governor AbdulRazaq said the state can no longer afford the payment of pension to the former leaders, which include the two former governors, Dr Saraki, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed and their deputies, who served two terms each between 2003 and 2019.
Governor AbdulRazaq signed the bill repealing the pension law during a brief budget signing ceremony attended by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, and some members of the Assembly.
Hon. Danladi-Salihu told the governor that members of the public were unanimous in demanding the repeal of the pension law during the public hearing.
