AN Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo last Wednesday sentenced one Iniobong Moses, 23, to life imprisonment for raping his 3-year-old step-daughter, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
The presiding judge, Justice Okon Okon, who delivered the sentence, said the man was “a disgrace to humanity, whose conduct falls abysmally below even the conduct of beasts.”
Justice Okon said the convict does not deserve to walk freely on Nigerian soil and breathe the air of freedom meant for decent members of the society.
The convict, court records reveal, had in a confessional statement owned up to the crime, saying he acted under the influence of alcohol. But the court rejected the claim as Justice Okon held that drunkenness was not an “exculpatory defence in law for the commission of a crime and more so, as it was self-inflicted.”
