THE police personnel deployed to Sankera axis of Benue State to tackle the rising insecurity in the area Thursday successfully prevented an attack on Haaga Village by suspected gunmen, but in the process, a police man was shot and later died in the hospital.

Late Dr Suswam, to be buried this weekend.

Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Catherine Sewuese Anene, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

The statement reads: “On 11/03/2021 at about 0800hrs information was received about an attack  on Haaga Village, Kastina-Ala Local Government Area, the team of Police Officers stationed within the community swiftly swung into action and engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel.

“During the exchange of fire, many of the hoodlums sustained gunshot injuries and fled into the forest while two policemen also sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to the General Hospital, Kastina-Ala, where one of them was confirmed dead and the other is receiving treatment.

“Cordon and search Operation is ongoing at Haaga and one suspect has been arrested.

“The good people of Sankara are advised to cooperate with police officers sent to the area,” the PPRO said.

The security situation in Sankera which comprises three local government areas: Ukum, Logo and Katsina-Ala, is becoming very alarming as just last week, Chief (Dr) Terkula Suswam, immediate elder brother to the former Benue State governor, and serving Senator representing Benue zone A, was murdered in his hometown of Anyiin, Logo LGA.

After Dr Suswam’s murder, series of killings have continued unabated in Sankera which has thrown people of the area into fear as the late Suswam is slated to be buried this weekend, Saturday, March 13, 2021.
